Nestled in the Foothills of the Colorado Rockies, 15 miles west of Denver, stands a symbol of nature's unparalleled majesty. Red Rocks is a geologically formed, open-air amphitheatre that is not duplicated anywhere in the world.
With Mother Nature as the architect, the natural design of the amphitheatre consists of two opposing, three hundred-foot monoliths (Ship Rock and Creation Rock) and Stage Rock (behind the stage) that provide acoustic perfection for any performance.
In 1927, George Cranmer, Manager of Denver Parks, convinced the City of Denver to purchase the area of Red Rocks for the price of $54,133. The Mayor of Denver, Ben Stapleton, enlisted the help of the federally sponsored Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and the Work Projects Administration (WPA), which provided labor and materials for the venture.
Denver architect Burnham Hoyt designed the amphitheatre with an emphasis on preserving the natural beauty of the area. Hoyt was inspired by the ancient Greek amphitheatre at Taormina (circa 300 BC), on the Italian island of Sicily.
The plans were completed in 1936, and the amphitheatre was formally dedicated on June 15, 1941. In 1947, the first annual Easter Sunrise Service took place, which has continued annually. Since 1947, Red Rocks amphitheatre has attracted the best performers to its stage. The earliest notable rock and roll performance at Red Rocks was by the Beatles on August 26, 1964.
Just some of great performers include: Eagles, Grateful Dead, Ella Fitzgerald, Moody Blues, Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Allman Brothers Band, John Denver, Dave Matthews, Sting, Seals & Crofts, Carole King, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Neil Young, R.E.M., Coldplay, and Phish. Canadian rock icon Geddy Lee of Rush is quoted as saying, "It's an amazing location. One of the most beautiful concert venues in America...or anywhere." Here are the current Red Rocks concerts and events.
Adjoining and inside Ship Rock, is the Ship Rock Grill, a great place for Sunday brunch, lunch or dinner before a show. Today the Red Rocks amphitheatre hosts over 750,000 tourists per year, and over 350,000 concert-goers per year! The pictures can’t capture the majesty and beauty of the Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, and a visit is truly in order.
Insider tip – Follow the signs to the upper "Top Circle" parking lot to avoid some strenuous high-altitude hiking. The park is open from 5AM to 11PM, daily free of charge.
